Serbian citizenship for Russian-speaking immigrants: three key routes with RICS Consulting

Updated 17.09.2026 · 3 min read

The route to Serbian citizenship begins with your history: where you were born, who your parents were, your spouse’s status and how long you have lived in Serbia. These circumstances determine the procedure and documents. Speaking Russian, registering a business or buying an apartment does not, by itself, create a separate simplified route.

  3. If you have Serbian ancestry or a history of emigration
  4. How to prepare for an assessment of your route

If you have moved to Serbia and live here

For ordinary admission, the checks cover permanent residence status, adulthood and legal capacity, and at least three years of continuously registered permanent domicile. The question of release from previous citizenship must also be addressed, and a declaration recognising Serbia as your state must be submitted.

First distinguish three stages: temporary residence, permanent status and citizenship. The date of first entry or registration as a sole trader does not replace checking the requirements for the final stage.

If someone in your family is already a Serbian citizen

A separate procedure applies to the spouse of a Serbian citizen: the marriage must have lasted at least three years, and the applicant must have been granted permanent residence. Family reunification as a basis for temporary residence and admission to citizenship are different procedures.

For children, the parents’ citizenship at the time of birth, the place of birth and timely registration matter. Collect birth certificates and the parents’ documents before ordering additional certificates. The child’s age may affect the next steps.

If you have Serbian ancestry or a history of emigration

The law separately addresses emigrants from Serbia and their descendants, and people belonging to the Serbian people. Do not conflate these grounds: each requires evidence of the relevant circumstances.

The working file begins with the chain of family relationships: births, marriages, surname changes, citizenship information and archival documents. A family story alone is not enough; at the same time, the absence of a ready-made file does not mean the documents cannot be recovered.

How to prepare for an assessment of your route

  1. Record the citizenships, places of birth and previous surnames of the applicant, parents and spouse.
  2. Collect existing residence decisions, family documents and information about previous applications.
  3. Note separately which documents are missing and in which country they can be requested.
  4. Clarify the applicable basis before taking steps to give up current citizenship. Do not begin that stage merely in anticipation of a possible application.

RICS will compare the documents with the appropriate procedure and prepare a list of missing items and a sequence of applications. The estimate will separate support from translations, archive requests and government payments. Applications are considered by Serbia’s Ministry of Interior; they may also be submitted through the relevant diplomatic mission.
