Obtaining Serbian citizenship

Serbia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists adulthood and legal capacity, granted permanent residence, at least three years of continuously registered permanent domicile, the question of release from foreign citizenship and a declaration recognising Serbia as one's own state.

This does not mean “three years on any residence permit, then a passport”. Temporary residence, permanent residence, permanent domicile registration and citizenship have different legal meanings.

A separate procedure applies to a foreign national who has been married to a Serbian citizen for at least three years and has obtained permanent residence. It should not be confused with general naturalisation or applied to an unregistered relationship.

Children's documents and the parents' involvement are also determined separately. It is best to prepare the family case as a whole so that marriage, birth and citizenship documents are consistent.

• Gather decisions on your status and information on permanent domicile registration.
• Prepare a history of citizenships, passports and name changes.
• Clarify the family grounds and the supporting documents.
• Disclose previous applications, requests for information or refusals.
• Before taking any steps to relinquish your current citizenship, agree on the legal sequence.

There is no universal timeframe for obtaining a passport without reviewing the case. The plan distinguishes preparation, government review, registration of the outcome and obtaining documents after admission to citizenship.

A citizenship decision affects the whole family and ties to another country. The first step is therefore to check your specific admission procedure and its consequences, rather than choose a promised timeframe.
